Our 23rd and Final Winter Exhibition

Sadly we announce with regret that this year’s exhibition will the final winter show here at Bury St. However we wish to celebrate the 13 years in St. James’s and the 23 years since the inception of what has been a most exciting journey.

In this final show we will feature many of our favourite and best-loved artists – those with whom we have worked for over two decades, and have become long-standing friends over many years. Much-loved illustrators such as Shirley Hughes, Anthony Browne, David McKee, Brian Wildsmith, Angela Barrett, Anita Jeram, Jane Ray, John Lawrence, Chris Wormell, Lauren Child and Benedict Blathwayt as well as those from farther afield such as Satoshi Kitamura, Shaun Tan and Maurice Sendak - all will be featured alongside film animators such as Nick Park and those at the Aardman Film Studios, and Brian Cosgrove, creator of Danger Mouse. We will also show graphic novel artwork by Alexis Deacon and Oliver Jeffers, with whom we have worked since his first book - and many others all of whom are household names.

With the onset of the festive season there will be an array of books signed by much-loved artists such as Axel Scheffler and Laura Carlin and we will also have a few rare books signed by our late dear friend Babette Cole.

We warmly extend our welcome for you to visit our 23rd Christmas Show, and much look forward to seeing many, who have been such great supporters and friends throughout the years.

The gallery will be open until 22nd December 2018. Online sales will continue over the festive period and on until 7 January 2019.

Nick Park's New Film - Early Man

Celebrating Early Man
March 2018

The new film by Nick Park from the much-loved and world-famous Aardman Studios in Bristol.

This new films, years in the making, sees three times Oscar Winner Nick Park returning to the big screen with a new film looking at the humourous aspects of our ancestors here on earth. No doubt a smash hit we are privileged to have on display here at the gallery tow original working character studies by the great man, Nick Park, himself.

A rare opportunity to acquire Nick's artwork these watercolour on paper drawings are terrific, and have Nick's trademark gentle humour that we all loved so much in the Wallace and Gromit films.

Not to be missed - a real collector's item for sure! the artwork can be viewed here at the gallery or on the website on the Aardman page.

Shirley Hughes - Newly Released Artwork

SPRING CLEANING WITH SHIRLEY
5 TO 29 MARCH 2018

NEW WORK FROM THE PERSONAL ARCHIVE OF SHIRLEY HUGHES

With the dawn of spring creeping ever-closer across our wintry horizon we are delighted to join forces with our favourite author and illustrator Shirley Hughes, and brush off the cobwebs of winter.

Always one to embrace the sunshine Shirley has already started her seasonal nettoyage, and we join her in wielding the boom in a spring cleaning bonanza of her studio and plan chest.

As such we are delighted to present from the depths of her private collection 9 freshly-seen and never before exhibited character studies. Original artwork that Shirley has produced in her oeuvre of Alfie and Annie Rose books.

These new pieces are truly some of the best we have seen, highly detailed and meticulously produced works, they epitomise the skill, ability and raw talent of Shirley Hughes’ towering contribution to books, education and the rich cultural heritage of Great Britain and beyond.

For those of you unaware, Shirley donated her life's artwork to The Bodleian Library in Oxford, where all original artwork and hand-written manuscripts are now saved for the nation. So these rare occasions when artwork is released from her private collection at home are a fantastic opportunity for enthusiasts and collectors to acquire her original art.

Now over 90 Shirley is still working, and plans a new book to be published later this year.
