The Enchanting World of Shirley Hughes
3 August – 3 September
SPECIAL EVENT: Tea with Shirley Hughes and Clara Vulliamy
Saturday 13 August - 3pm onwards.
Featuring pre-publication copies of the new book Alfie and his Very Best Friend.
Over the past fifty years Shirley Hughes has enchanted, delighted and fascinated readers both young and old. The children that grew up with her wonderful books are now parents themselves - teaching and guiding their own families with the same stories that they loved so much as children.
Our summer exhibition for Shirley Hughes is a warm and heart-felt accolade – not only for one of the greatest writers and illustrators of our generation, a fine ambassador to the world for British books, literature and way of life but also for a compassionate and sensitive mother, who cares greatly about the world in which she has lived both as child and adult.
Surrounded by a close-knit family she draws inspiration from their happiness and success as well as their trials and tribulations - the every-day triumphs and the quantum losses we all feel daily. It is this insight, perception and good humour that makes Shirley loved, and appreciated by all.
Our summer exhibition displays a range of the vivid and colourful characters that inhabit Shirley’s enchanting world, with whom her stories have now become our own. She has generously released a series of delightful studies providing rich insight in to the working methods and creation of each character in books long-published as well as the much-awaited new Alfie and his Very Best Friend.
We are honoured to exhibit Shirley’s artwork here at the gallery, and we warmly invite you to join us for ‘Tea with Shirley, and her daughter Clara Vulliamy’, who will be here from 3pm on Saturday 13th August to meet visitors, and sign copies of their joint Dixie O’Day series, as well as Shirley’s own books, including rare pre-publication copies of Alfie and his Very Best Friend.
All original artwork is for sale, and in a special release prices for full-colour working character studies will start from only £500. Website preview live from 25 July.
