Jane Hissey’ s Old Bear is one of the great picture-book favourites of the past twenty five years, and the her much-loved series of children’s books, Old Bear and Friends has charmed generations of children since her first book, Old Bear, was published in 1986. Instantly capturing children’s imaginations, the Old Bear series has sold an astounding seven million copies worldwide. Following this success, the Old Bea books became the basis for the popular animation series Old Bear Stories, which won a BAFTA for ‘Best Children’s Programme’ in 1993) and was even immortalised in a hugely collectable series of Royal Doulton figurines.

Whilst studying illustration in Brighton under illustrators Raymond Briggs and John Vernon Lord, Hissey developed her now well-known, unique style. Drawn from life, her softly-rendered, coloured-pencil illustrations are lovingly and painstakingly produced, often taking weeks to complete. Her characters, based on well-worn childhood toys, are familiar to adults and children alike.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Old Bear, Illustrationcupboard is proud to present Jane Hissey’s first one-man exhibition, featuring original illustrations from four Old Bear titles. This is the first time Jane Hissey has presented this body of work for exhibition and purchase, offering the serious collector a real opportunity to acquire exceptional illustrative work. Prices start at £850 for original artwork and a selection of signed books will also be available.

Evening reception and drinks with Jane Hissey on Wednesday 21 September 2011 at 5.30pm onwards.
